Thousands of pilgrims come together at yatra places. More than a million people congregate at Pandharpur. It is impracticable to construct permanent latrines for such vast number. Vanarai has, therefore, developed spraying of bacterial culture “Enviro Mitra” on excreta and other food waste, which considerably reduces bad odour, flies and mosquitoes. In addition the waste is converted in to valuable organic manure in a short period of time. This activity is undertaken by Vanarai since last 5 years, and is being appreciated by local citizens and Varkaries.
BENEFITS OF USING ENVIRO-MITRA:
Simple, affordable and practical user friendly technique
Human excreta is sanitized on siteUse of hazardous/polluting chemicals like bleaching powder and pesticides is
eliminated
Foul odour generated by decomposition of human waste is removed and stopped
Pathogen population in waste is controlled
Reduced fly and mosquito menace
Zero pollution of soil and groundwater
Toxic human waste converted into value added useful manure
Can be recycled into agriculture as nutrient source for crops
Short composting cycle: 6-8 weeks
Sustainable ‘Closed Loop’ system
Helps restore natural cycle of life building materials disrupted by current sanitation practices
Flexibility and Multiple Applications: Waste Collected in Open Areas :
Spray BBC formulation on the waste
Dust Deod powder after spraying
Collect treated waste into containers previously sprayed and dusted
Transfer to composting pits at dump yard and continue application in laminar manner
Cover filled pits to allow waste conversion into manure
Toilets at religious centers/towns/villages/public places:
Design simple leach pits/chambers to facilitate segregation of solid excreta and liquid urine
Discontinue use of cleaning chemicals
Clean toilet with water
Spray with BBC formulation
Dust with Deod powder
Same treatment in pits/septic tanks
Human Waste Treatment in Open Area:
BBC Spraying and Deod Powder Dusting
BBC Culture Spray in Toilet
Deod Powder Application in Toilets
Treatment in Pits/Septic Tanks
